Been going to Darrin since 2011. He takes his time and gives you the haircut you ask for. He is respectful and professional. The vibe and the shop is chill, quiet, low key, and welcoming

he took me in as a very last minute walk-in and for that im very grateful but he didnt entirely cut the back of my head, i had to go somewhere else to finish the cut. he cut the rest well but id wager youd have to give specific instructions and be very vigilant to make sure he cuts it the way you want

I was looking for a no frills barber. I don't want a beer or chardonnay, thank you. No I don't want to watch a meditation video while I wait for an available chair, but thanks for asking. No, I'm not interested in sampling your line of artisan shaving lotions or creams. I just want a beard trim. And, that's what you get here. The barber was focused on quality, but didn't neglect the finer points of human interaction. We talked about the OSU getting hosed (a bowl game was on the television). We chatted about the need for Black folks to own property. We laughed at all the new hipster barber shops springing up around town. And I left the chair with a great $12 trim. Fast service, good conversation, and reasonable prices. That's what you get at Salon 17th. P.S. Don't forget to support Oakland-raised businesses and to tip your barber.
