I feel very fortunate to be a part of Hula Pono. The knowledge of Hula that is thought to us by our Kumu Pam Akina,The friendships that I made, Its like one large family.Even though I’m not dancing at the present time because of health reasons, I haven’t given up and looking forward to the day I’m back dancing.
Aloha....I joined Hula Pono over a year ago after a 20+ break from dancing hula all my life on the most part. You know the having kids, sports, coaching cheerleading, competitions, traveling and all that took over and now since kids all grown up my turn to return to what I love with a passion. I will tell you since day 1 walking thru the doors of the halau has been nothing short of the aloha culture. It's important to me to dance for the right reasons and every dance I've learned thru this halau tells a story and the meaning of the dance is communicated by the instructor in every way possible. Then you have your members of your halau....all my sistahs and now a new braddah (He's gonna be great!!!) and the keiki's OMG! Wait for it....then the Tahitian girls.....awesome. Wait again, then you have ukulele classes now which may I add is FREE every 1st and 3rd Thursday at the halau. And this year (I can't wait) in 2018 they will have a new drumming class on the 4th Thursday of each month. I told kumu (I call her that) she needs a bigger studio....oh! she just moved to a brand new studio and already has to add classes.....I'm loving it! I keep saying wait.....we've danced many events in 2017 and 2018 will be even better....I loved dancing at the Aloha Festival but what I enjoyed the most was dancing for the Senior Living Group (several times) what a joy to watch these people enjoy the culture, the music the aloha....o.k. o.k. and finally was being part of the CHRISTMAS ELF aloha. The halau raised enough donations to go out to the community in Lincoln, CA and make (3) families Holidays very special. Yes we were their Santa's. I was part of the group who delivered to these 3 families and to watch those kids faces....make me cry! I get tears in my eyes right now typing it. So Aloha means many things as I was taught growing up and this halau has taught me many things as well. No matta what age or gender you are and you love the Hawaiian culture, the music and dance, or ukulele or even singing....you owe it to yourself to make the call and come see us. This is my time, my aloha, my peace, my humbling of life. So Aloha and mahalo nui loa Halau Hula Pono for warming my heart and soul with all your aloha.
