When Dr. Yoon took reigns of this office and begun her solo practice after the original dentist retired she made the transition incredibly smooth for past patients. “Been a patient of Dr. Khalifeh's for over 8 years. I live on the westside of LA and gladly drive out to their office to get check-ups and treatment, as they are consistently great at providing care and attention. The entire team is super welcoming and helpful, from the front desk and back room support team, to all the hygienists, the Dr. Khalifeh himself. Would recommend to anyone in search of a dentist, be it routine cleaning and check up, or more involved procedures.“

“EDIT - I really feel like the staff worked hard to make up for our negative experience and in the end we had a positive experience. We were charged through our insurance as we originally wanted and the cost was reasonable for high quality dental work for both me and my husband. They also offer perks for referrals and have a good, family atmosphere. In general, I would definitely recommend this dentist so long as you make doubly sure they are going through your insurance if that is what you want. -- I'm going with two stars because the teeth cleaning service was very good. But I strongly suspect many of these most recent reviews are solicited at checkout after the positive experience with the cleaning and before problems arise. I was happy with my cleaning and scheduled a follow up for fillings - even though I wasn't given a write up of exactly what they'd be doing at my next appointment along with how much that would cost with my insurance, I was assured that I would be. I had no problem believing that because it's industry standard. Based on my husband's experience yesterday, I see that was likely a lie. In his experience, they will take any opportunity to charge you without sufficiently explaining what procedure it is even for, pressure people into pre-payment and then refuse to explain what it's for, refuse to provide any documentation of recommended/half-payed-for procedures, make you sign documentation in the office but refuse to provide any copies of it or even explain what those documents say - and then talk to you like you're insane for asking for any of that. I would be very careful about going here, especially if you don't have a ton of experience going to dentists and might be freaked out or scared enough to think this TOTALLY SCAMMY behavior is at all normal. It's not. When the woman on the phone implied my husband was stupid because he was afraid of dental work and just wanted to sign whatever and get out of there - a very normal phobia to have, plenty of people are freaked out by the dentist - that was the icing on the cake. You shouldn't have to forcefully advocate for yourself just to receive basic respect. Awful experience and a real day-ruiner. I really advise folks not to make the same mistake my husband and I did.“

“I went to Downtown Dental with an emergency on a Monday. They took me without issue immediately. I unfortunately had an infected wisdom tooth that should’ve been removed a few years ago. Susie was one of the dental team members in the room with me throughout my very long treatment that day. I ended up having two wisdom teeth removed under nitrous as I am deathly afraid of being put under. The dentist and team did have a good recommendation for an oral surgeon but they saw how terrified and in pain I had been (they gave me antibiotics in order to help with the pain before we got to the stage of me deciding to let the dentist do the extractions vs going to the recommended surgeon the next day). I cannot speak more highly of Susie, both dentists, and the whole office staff. I have never had such kind treatment while in such excruciating pain and been believed at that! I’m now on the mend since my extractions and am looking forward to being able to have other dental needs (ie I have plenty of cavities and a misaligned bite) with Downtown Dental. Btw I did call about 4 dental offices that morning of my emergency need and Downtown Dental was the only one that could take me within 30 mins versus 3-4 hours later. This was key on why I went there after I Googled them because I’d been unable to eat, drink, and sleep for up to 72 hours. And again, HUGE shoutout to Susie for seriously being the kindest to me. She understood my anxiety and fear was very high, and even read the note I had in my Notes app because I could barely speak from the pain. I can’t speak to anyone else’s experience at Downtown Dental, but this was mine as a member of an identity group often disbelieved or stereotyped as able to take all levels of pain. ?“

“Let me preface: I have been grinding my teeth every night for as long as I can remember, and I clench my jaw unintentionally all day (and likely all night) long. I’ve had multiple night guards and have ground through almost all of them. I have had headaches all my life and have woken up with jaw pain more days than not.

One day I was stretching my jaw and heard a pop. I didn’t think much of it, but over the next two weeks my jaw kept hurting (more than usual) until finally I couldn’t eat without feeling intense pain. After being relegated to liquids and being in excruciating pain if I opened my jaw too wide or touched my teeth together, I knew I finally had to get help; but of course it was a long holiday weekend, so I couldn’t see my dentist until the following week. I went to urgent care (who didn’t do anything) so I went to the ER to see if they could help, but they said it was a dental issue so they couldn’t help either, however, I was lucky enough to have an ER nurse who told me she experienced the same thing and went to Dr. Shirazi for TMD. She warned me that he didn’t take insurance and it would be a bit costly, but after doing more research, I couldn’t find any TMJ specialists covered by my insurance, so I figured it may be my only choice.

When I went for my consultation he asked me questions and conducted a few small tests to determine what was wrong and when he knew exactly what the problem was, (especially after seeing various other doctors who couldn’t help me) I knew he was my only hope, so I signed up for the treatment plan. They did a CT scan and to see my jaw alignment and then took a scan of my mouth for a daytime and nighttime appliance. However, because it would take a few weeks for them to be available, he made me a temporary night orthotic and I finally felt pain relief within about 3 days (even with just the temporary appliance). I got my appliances, and had to learn how to keep my jaw in place when I opened and closed my mouth and while eating. It took awhile to retrain myself with the daytime appliance, but after a few weeks I was back to eating solid foods and was already experiencing less jaw pain in the morning and less frequent headaches.

Although he is not covered by insurance and I had to pay out of pocket, it was worth every penny to be almost entirely free of headaches and jaw pain (and be able to eat actual food again - there for awhile I thought I may never be able to). Plus, the one payment includes all appointments, CT scans, day and night orthotics and acupuncture.

*Note: After a year of nightly use, I broke my nighttime appliance (from clenching) and he had to make me a new one, so I highly recommend to all those who have ground through mouth guards before, ask for the nylon mouth guards at the beginning so you don’t have to pay for them to be remade (and so you’re not without your appliance while you wait).

Overall, I highly recommend Dr Shirazi and his team if you have any TMJ related issues. It’s worth it to be able to see someone who actually has answers and knows how to help treat you. You won’t be disappointed!“
