A great way to see the Rock! We decided to try this tour mid week when the crowds were down and ticket availability was high. It is a very well done tour that had docent led walks as well as an audio tour that was very comprehensive and educational. Whether a local or a tourist this is a must do on your SF Tour list.
Booked this cruise last minute. I would recommend booking it in advance if you have a specific day/time you are looking to go. There were a lot of times and dates sold out when we booked it, but since we were flexible it wasn't a big deal. One of the most inconvenient things is parking. There aren't many places to park in the area, and the parking spots that are available are extremely expensive. Most places were at least $30 for an entire day of parking. We lucked out and found a parking lot that was cheaper, but had to be out by 3PM. The process of getting ready to board is quick and organized. There are bathrooms, food and drinks in the little area by the cruise. The cruise itself is short and pretty cold/windy if you choose to sit on the top of the boat. Once arriving in Alcatraz, we pretty much did our own thing exploring the island. They give you a headset with a spoken tour, which we listened to for about 10 minutes then gave up. However, a lot of folks were really into the spoken tour, it just wasn't our thing. You can walk around the island and explore as much as you want, then hop on the cruise ship back to SF when you feel you've had enough. It is A LOT of walking, and a lot of uphill - so wear comfortable shoes!
Loved the tour! I invited a friend to the tour with me and we both enjoyed it. The audio's are great and help a better understanding of the history of the prison. We had a pretty good time. Thanks Alcatraz Cruises!
