The best vet in the area! The vets and vet techs are always so kind and do a great job making our cats feel comfortable. Dr. Nick Gunter was so helpful, he answered all of our questions and was so passionate talking about how to best care for our pets. Can’t recommend them enough.

It was easy to set an appointment. The staff was fast and friendly throughout the entire wellness checkup for our kitten. The price was a value compared to some of the rates in our region, and they offer a military discount which helps.
We plan on using this place for our future veterinary care needs. Keep up the great work!

My dog had a vet that he hadn't had yet on his last visit, Dr. Bryfonski. She was WONDERFUL! She didn't seem annoyed by my dog's reticence (a kinder word for what he really is at the vet) but rather was very empathetic and understanding. She was patient, kind and very competent. Thank you!

I adopted my dog in August 2025, and this was one of the recommended vets by the adoption service (Lucky Dog Animal Rescue). I can see why - it’s super easy to book appointments, the staff is knowledgeable and friendly, and they’re always very timely and organized. All of the vets that have seen my dog have been very supportive with her being anxious and take their time to make her feel comfortable. I feel very happy with the service, care, and attention they provide to my dog and to me as a nervous, first-time dog mom :). Highly, highly recommend.

We always have an excellent experience at Shirlington Animal Hospital. The staff is friendly, communicative, and most importantly, great with our animals.

There is a reason why we continue to visit SAH after moving away from the Shirlington area. Dr. Nick and JC are experts in their field by taking the time to discuss any inquiry we have along with taking the best care of Gunner.

I never leave reviews, but after 4 negative visits with my new puppy and after bad experiences with my late dog, I feel I have a valid review to share- as a warning to other pet owners. I brought my late dog, Ben, to this clinic for about 6 years, until his health became complicated and he developed heart disease- which they never caught or flagged as a warning until he was in heart failure. They identified him with joint pain, and prescribed him injections for that, which failed. I ended up taking him to the emergency room in Friendship Heights to address his failing condition, and they were able to treat him and extend his life with treatment.
Fast forward a few years later.. I bring my new puppy in to be examined. He is fine. However, No one at this clinic, tried to build a positive relationship with my dog. They don’t greet you or your pet when you arrive. They are sterile and dry. They are cold. They don’t ask you questions as a new patient about your pet. My dog grows up a bit, a year old, and needs vaccines. He is fearful. They muzzle him and give him the vaccines. They tell me I need to give him trazadone before visits. The last visit- today- was terrible-and I will never go back. My young dog had a sinus infection. He was not well and needed help. Again, there was no effort to build a relationship with him. We were presented with a cold atmosphere and assumptions of what kind of dog he was. The doctor implied that my dog was a problem at home as well. He had never even met my dog prior to this visit. My dog is playful and sweet. He never has shown aggression. My dog has high anxiety and fear related to the vet- which we need to work on. I was dismayed that no one seemed to understand that building a relationship was important. We will not be going back. We went to another animal doctor later in the day and got the antibiotics and care we needed. I should of learned my lesson sooner.
