Satori Academy of Martial Arts, founded by Dave Kovar, is a nationwide organization that aims to teach students empowering life skills alongside traditional martial arts training. The term "Satori," borrowed from Japanese, represents the academy's goal for all students: to be "in the moment, at your best." At the Satori Academy East Brunswick branch, students benefit from a personalized learning approach, with the team being described as helpful and considerate. One student has shown significant improvement in confidence and social skills after five years of attendance. The impact of the academy is also evident in the case of a shy and introverted child who joined in January 2022. Thanks to the efforts of Sempai Matt, Abby, and other staff members, this child has made remarkable progress. The academy's Sensei's ensure each child feels important while fostering an enjoyable environment. They focus on developing essential skills such as staying focused, taking turns, and active listening. The staff's dedication to checking in with parents and students further enhances the sense of community and involvement.

From Satori Academy of Martial Arts

The Satori Academy Story begins with Dave Kovar, our founder and Kyoshi (Master Teacher). Dave Kovar opened his first school in 1978 in Northern California with the philosophy that the principles behind martial arts have wide application in students' lives. This innovative approach combined empowering life skills with traditional martial arts training and led to nationwide recognition. Kovar named his now nationwide organization Satori Academy, borrowing the Japanese term for enlightenment, Satori. Satori symbolizes our goal for all our students, to be "in the moment, at your best."
