The ballroom is big! It's welcoming for college students and families because it is in an arts center rather than a bar. Also, it is volunteer-run, with plenty of opportunities to volunteer for free admission. I have been volunteering with them for over four years.

Fun place to learn to swing dance! They give lessons, then have three hours of social dancing time afterwards! The one thing to keep in mind is parking, which can be tricky to find the first time. Give yourself a few extra minutes for that, and check the website for details on overflow parking, if needed.

I love swing dancing! DSDS is a volunteer-run organization, and they host dances + workshops ("Swing on a String") 3 Saturday evenings a month at the Sammons Center for the Arts. With a year membership ($15 for students!!), you get free intermediate workshops (6-8pm) and a discounted entry to the social dance at 9pm. It's been totally worth it. The instructors are fabulous, and I've learned fun lindy moves. Each week there may be different instructors, and the month's dance for the workshop also changes (lindy, charleston, balboa). There's a beginner lesson at 8pm for anyone new to east coast swing so you're ready to go for the social dance at 9 ($7 for members, $10 for nonmembers). Everyone has been friendly here with wide range of ages from college students to the older population. They also have a live band once a month. :) They accept cash + card!

From Dallas Swing Dance Society

Dallas Swing Dance Society (DSDS) is dedicated to preserving swing dance culture in Dallas by offering weekly dances and lessons. Held on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Saturday of every month, DSDS offers a welcoming, safe space to socialize and dance to jazz music. Popular dances include 6 Count Swing, Lindy Hop, Collegiate Shag, Charleston, and Balboa. Swing dancing originally began in Harlem, New York at the integrated Savoy Ballroom in the 1930s. With Afro-American roots, Lindy Hop and the other swing dances took America by storm; being found throughout society and featured in movies till the end of the 1950s.
